Hi, Again Poppajohn here. I am finally getting around to addressing the vacation season for the newsletter subscribers and bloggers. Right now we will just worry about those of us who have a single family home to worry about while they are gone, later we’ll address keeping apartments safe while empty and how to stay relatively safe while on vacation.

Okay we all realize that our homes are most vulnerable when we are away so here’s a few things you can do to keep them safe while you are gone.

1. • Try to make sure your home looks like someone is living in it. Don’t close your curtains cuz closed curtains during the day makes the house look empty. Think about getting automatic time or photo control switches to turn your lights on when it gets dark and off in the daytime.

2. • Have good dead bolts installed on all outside doors, and place locks or alarm locks on all downstairs or easily accessible windows.

3. • Try to make it appear as if the house is occupied, start by cancelling any milk or newspaper deliveries. Cut the lawn before you go and trim back any plants that burglars could hide behind. Get a friend or neighbor to look after your home. They can collect your mail, mow your lawn and so on. This gives the impression that someone is living in your home. If you leave keys with a neighbor, don’t label them with your address.

4. • Don’t leave valuables, like your TV, DVD or Video Game Box, where people can see them through windows. Hey if nothing else cover them with a towel or other cloth.

5. • Mark any valuable items with your zip code and house number using an ‘invisible’ pen that you can get from DIY shops or e-mail me poppajohn@personalsecurity4u.net and I can get one to place on the web site for ordering. If your property is stolen, this will help the police to identify it if it is found, which might not only allow them to return it to you but could also provide them with better evidence to convict the people responsible.

6. • Make sure that you have up-to-date contents insurance.

7. • Do not put your home address on your luggage when you are traveling to your holiday destination. Mooks have actually been known to pay airport workers for this information.

8. • Lock the garage and shed if you have one with proper heavy duty security locks, after putting all your tools safely away so they cannot be used to break into your house. If you need to leave a ladder out, put it on its side and lock it to a secure fixture with a ‘close shackle’ padlock or heavy-duty chain.

9. • Finally, lock all outside doors and windows. If you have a burglar alarm, make sure it is set and that you have told the police who has the key.

10. • And just before you leave, it’s worth spending a couple of minutes checking through the list to be sure that you’ve done all you had to do and taken everything that you need with you.

11. • Also if you have a neighborhood watch for your street be sure the designated one in charge knows you will be gone, and the dates.

Well that oughta help some, if you can accomplish those things or come close it will go a long way towards insuring you house and property are still there waiting for you when you get home.

Saturday in my local paper there was a story about a former soldier P.F.C. Joseph Dwyer

who had volunteered as a medic and participated in the original Iraqui Freedom Campaign and the incredibly successful run up to Baghdad which had been orchestrated by my old classmate T.R. Franks. He had been photographed rescuing an Iraqui child that had been injured by shrapnel and had been treated as the hero that he was although he always deflected that by turning it to the other guys who he said deserved that accolade more. He had a wife and baby daughter he obviously loved very much. Heroism turned to tragedy after the young man returned home suffering from ptsd he could not cope with the images from the combat and imagining the enemy all around him. He simply went downhill until he ended up abusing inhalants until he died alone without his family, no friends, no anything. Terribly tragic and on the front page. We must do something to see to it that our returning heroes do not have something like this happen to them. Not a fitting end for a legitimate hero and such an obviously fine man.

The same day I received an e-mail with the following story about a local hero from Garden Grove, CA.:

This much I knew. PO2 (EOD2) Mike Monsoor, a Navy EOD Technician, was awarded the
Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously for jumping on a grenade in Iraq,
giving his life to save his fellow Seals.

This I did not know. During Mike Monsoor’s funeral in San Diego, as his coffin
was being moved from the hearse to the grave site at Ft. Rosecrans National
Cemetery, forty five of his fellow SEALs were lined up on both sides of the
pallbearers route forming a column of two’s, with the coffin moving up the
center. As Mike’s coffin passed, each SEAL, having removed his SEAL gold
Trident Insignia from his uniform, slapped it down embedding the Trident in the wooden coffin.

The slaps were audible from across the cemetery; by the time the coffin
arrived grave side, it looked as though it had a gold inlay from all the
Tridents pinned to it. This was a fitting send-off for a warrior hero.

This should be front-page news also at least as much as PFC Dwyers’ tragic story.
Since the major portion of the mainstream media won’t make this news, I can at
least blog it. I am proud of our military. I am certain that you are also proud of them.
We can all rest assured that the fine men and women of our military will continue to
serve and die with honor. God bless all the PFC Dwyers and PO2 Monsoors. Where do
we get such men?

Hi, Folks; De Old Effo is back cuz bears are in the news here in California: A woman walking her two dogs in Caliente CA. (Thats a rural town near the mountains and a recent burn area) was attacked and severely injured by a black bear, the reason we know it was a Black bear is cuz back when folks in California did things fer the benefit of the “Human” race the Grizzlies were eliminated for being too likely to eat someone. Bears are sometimes provoked by dogs who get between a mother and her cubs but it doesn’t seem to be the case here. The woman although injured managed to escape the attack and drive herself to a fire station along with her two dogs I guess. One of the dogs was also injured but not seriously they say. The lady was later airlifted to UCLA Medical Center for further treatment.
Folks, Poppajohn has been saying for years don’t camp in, walk in, eat in, drive through, or even be near possible bear habitat without bear spray or a high caliber firearm at hand, both are best. Bears are unpredictable, they do what they damn well please and fifty years of watching em be cute and cuddly on World of Disney does not change that. The bear authorities here (i.e. Fish and Game) were trying to track the bear so far without success. Why were they tracking the bear (to kill it) we kill them after they attack a human. Kind of like the police whose job it is to respond to crime not prevent it. Hey it’s Poppajohn again I’ve had a tough day. Spent the whole morning straightening out screw ups that happened on the weekend that I like to think weren’t my fault. Hey folks, Poppajohn here It’s just Saturday morning and I’m on a conference call while trying to type one handed. Yeah one of these days I gotta get a head set. Local divorced dads seem to be goin nuts had three lately up and kill their ex wives during a meeting to pick up or bring back their children. Hey folks Poppajohn here. This is the first post for the new blog here on Personal Security 4U
We haven’t met before but you probably have a good idea where I’m comin from just by viewing the web site. Poppajohn was a soldier a long time ago and just can’t seem to shake the feelin that the world still needs em. More bout me some other time.
Some of you have been e-mailing me asking for some good hot specials for the 4th of July. Well I been thinkin bout that and I think I have a good one even though it’s been around awhile. Taser weapons in something like a succinct manner.

First to begin with there are two types of stun weapons
available today. Number one is the
traditional
stun gun with two portruding electrodes (positive
and negative) which set up an electrical circuit between
the two electrodes so that current will pass between
them when the stun gun is activated.

models are typically powered by nine volt alkaline
batteries or for most of the later
models three volt lithium camera batteries which
allows them to be constructed on a smaller frame. Conventional
stun systems primarily effect the sensory nervous system.
Something like static on the communication lines between
the brain and the body, stun systems interfere with
the human command and control systems. The effect is
the muscles contract and relax at a very high rate However,
a small percentage of people with very high tolerance
for electrical stimulation can fight through the effect
of these 7-14 Watt systems, more about how
stun guns work.

The Air
Taser M18 and the Self
Defense Taser C2 weapons are much more aggressive
in that one need not wait until your assailant or would
be assailant is close enough to touch. Taser Weapons
fire their electrode probes out to a distance of 15
feet (civilian) or as much as 35 feet (law enforcement)
at 135 feet per second which attach to the aggressor
and send current through wires to the probes which sets
up a current flow (circuit) between them. Taser weapons
also use a more powerful
18 to 26 Watt electrical
signal (known as EMD Electro Muscular Disruption or
NMI Neuro-Muscular Incapacitation) which can completely
override the central nervous system and directly control
the skeletal muscles. The electrical signal transmits
throughout the area where the probes make contact with
the body or clothing quickly resulting in the attacker
losing neuromuscular control and the ability to perform
any co-ordinated actions. The energy can penetrate as
much as two cumulative inches of clothing or one inch
per probe.They do not however rely on huge voltage to
get the job done they only use 50,000 volts as opposed
to the million or two with the highest powered stun
guns. Utilizing an automatic
timing mechanism to apply the electric charge results
in a Shaped Pulse™ Technology that is a
sophisticated pulse wave which utilizes a high voltage
leading edge to penetrate barriers such as clothing
around the body followed by a lower voltage stimulation
pulse to cause the Neuro-Muscular Incapacitation. The
TASER releases the electric current
in a preset time sequence (initially seven seconds followed
by a number of 1.8 second breaks for a total time of
about 30 seconds in each cycle).This cycle ensures that
the nervous system of the target ain’t gonna recover
sufficiently enough to allow him to remove the probes.
The following bursts disrupt the process of the mook’s
regaining equilibrium of his nervous system. While the
would be perp is disabled and the taser is still delivering
follow-on bursts, you can place the device on the ground
and escape. Yeah, SCOOT. Mooks are just generally (not
nice people) you don’t want to be there when he recovers.
Just a copy of the police report will get your taser
unit replaced.

The Air Cartridge is a replaceable module that is easily
affixed to the front of either the M or X Series Models
of Taser. the Self Defense Taser C2 uses a similar cartridge
which is optimized for and fits only the C2 Models.
By firing the electrodes out from the Taser it allows
for the engagement of targets at ranges up to 15 feet.
The electrodes are fired using a blast of compressed
nitrogen for a propulsion system, the cartridges incorporate
the high voltage insulated TASER wire connected to two
bi-metal probes, and AFID serialization.

The Anti-Felon Identification (AFID) is a system which
attempts to identify the user of the taser for each
firing. Thereby possibly detering misuse of the Taser
through enhanced accountability. The AFID includes the
bar-coded ID of each and every SELF
DEFENSE TASER C2 cartridge or AIR
TASER M18 Cartridge and disperses numerous confetti-like
ID tags upon activation (when the cartridge is fired).
Thus allowing for tracing the buyer of the cartridge.

Laser Sight Integration is available for the SELF DEFENSE
TASER C2 a microprocessor controls laser illumination
for the laser sighting on the Self Defense Taser C2
when the safety switch is activated. Laser sighting
is also available on the Air Taser M18 though it is
straight laser sighting and not micro-processor controlled.

The power source for the self defense taser C2 is an
integrated power source with lithium battery cells and
a solid-state memory module which tracks power consumption,
power levels remaining, and allows for software updates
to be distributed by incorporating them into replacement
batteries.

The power source for the air taser m18 is 8 AA Duracell
Ultra Alkaline batteries or Energizer Nickel Metal Hydride
rechargeable AA batteries, self contained inside a polyethylene
battery tray, with a feature to prevent reverse insertion.
Output: 50,000V 18 Watts, 1.76 Joules per pulse energy
(5-second automatic timing cycle per discharge)
