Hi, Folks
Been so bummed out lately by all the liberal goingson in DC that I haven’t had the wherewithall to even sit down at the keyboard and type. The United States is being wiped out in front of our eyes and we are helpless to do anything about it.
I probably would not be writing this had it not been for a good customer who e-mailed me and kind of snapped me out of my bummer. I had to e-mail him back with some explanation of my actions and then launched into a small rant about the state of the state and afterwards I liked it so much I jus hadda reprint it for you, at least part of it is below.
“I must be honest with you concerning my current state of mind. The present political situation distresses me terribly, the President and Congress are determined to turn my wonderful US into Cuba. The Country it seems is now progressing toward that end so much faster than at any time in history that I walk around talking to myself. I wake up nights worrying about the future of my family and even my own, short as it probably is. The new taxes, governmental programs, bailouts, takeovers and controls on individuals I am certain will combine to be sure catastrophe for the US. We tripled the money supply with the stimulus package, when that money leaves the bank vaults and our savings assumes 30% of it’s previous worth will be the real knife in the back. *The one trillion dollar estimate over ten years of the cost of the healthcare package which will certainly be approved (** and then provide governmental care for 1/3 of those presently without health insurance) would be hilarious if it weren’t so inherently tragic. Never has there been a political program whose actual cost was even close to the original politician’s estimate, they always exceed it and usually by several times the estimate. The quality of the people in charge of both houses of Congress (no matter the party) is particularly troubling. They apparently have no clue of the consequences of their actions and are instead focused on being re-elected rather than taking care of their constituents.
I have been very lax about keeping the blogs and e-mails going to my faithful customers as I should have and I am blaming that on the state of the Union. I hope you have shocked me back into reality so I deal with those things I have control of instead of being catatonic due to worrying about what I can’t.

* Oops sorry I guess the estimate has already been increased to two trillion over ten years and then increased to “well we just don’t know”, great.
** this of course means that the other 66% will be clamoring for their cut thus increasing the cost by three times what it eventually turns out to be

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced
by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by
our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.
The first year results are now in:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent,
Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent;
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!
In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent.
(Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not and criminals still possess their guns!)
While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.
There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home.
Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in ’successfully ridding Australian society of guns.’ You won’t see this on the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State Assembly disseminating this information.
The Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens.

Well thank God the holidays including MLK will be over after Monday. Guess that means I can get busy and do something other than eating, going to parties, eating, going to relatives, eating, going to casinos and eating and drinking along with a little poker. Ole Poppajohn actually came in second in a poker tournament at Harrah’s Rincon here in the People’s Republic of Arnold’s California. Conveniently for me the ATMs in those places are all located inside, prominent and usually with an armed guard close by so there was no need to worry so much about someone attempting to relieve me of my cash. All ATMs however are not so well placed and if you must use one after hours it should be cause for concern. Poppajohn will attempt to help out with that worry with the following treatise on ATM Security. I will follow up with a real neat new special.

ATM SECURITY
ATM cash machines have been incorporated in our way of life. They offer a real convenience to those on the run but at the same time offer an element of risk. Using an ATM machine safely requires awareness and a little planning. Just because an ATM machine is open and available 24-hours a day doesn’t mean it is safe to use it. Most ATM robberies occur at night between 8:00 PM and midnight. ATM robbers are usually males under 25 years of age and most work alone. ATM robbers usually position themselves nearby waiting for a victim to approach and withdraw cash. Most ATM robbery victims are women and were alone when robbed. Most claim that they never saw the robber coming. Most ATM robbers used a gun or claimed to have a concealed weapon when confronting the victim and demanding their cash.
If you or your family members use ATM cash machines on a regular basis, here are some tips that can make the process a little safer:
• Use only ATM machines in well-lighted, high-traffic areas. Don’t use ATM machines
that are remote or hidden such as being located behind buildings, behind pillars, walls,
or away from public view. Beware of obvious hiding places like shrubbery or
overgrown trees. ATM robbers like to have the element of surprise and no witnesses.
Robbers like good escape routes like nearby freeway on-ramps or high speed
thoroughfares.
• Choose an ATM that looks and ‘feels’ safer, even if it is a couple of miles out of the
way. Try and limit your use to daylight hours. Take someone with you after hours, if
you can. When you drive up to an ATM location, scan the area for any suspicious
persons. If you see anyone suspicious standing nearby or sitting in a car, drive away.
When you approach an ATM on foot be prepared and have your access card ready.
Memorize your personal PIN number (never write it down) to prevent loss and speed the transaction. After inserting your card and your PIN number keep an eye out behind you. Never accept an offer to help or request for help from a suspicious male ahead of you at the machine. If anyone suspicious or seemingly dangerous approaches terminate your transaction and leave immediately, even if it means running away and leaving your ATM card in the machine. First, tell the suspicious male in a loud, firm voice to “back-off” and leave you alone. This is designed to startle the person and give you time to flee, if appropriate. When you receive cash from the machine put it away immediately, extract your card, and walk away.
• If you use your car at a drive-thru ATM machine the same rules apply plus the following. Keep the car in gear, with your foot firmly on the brake, while using the ATM machine. Keep a close eye on your rear and side view mirrors during the transaction. Robbers almost always approach from the rear on the drivers side. If you see anyone approaching, drive off even if it means leaving your ATM card behind. If you are confronted by an armed robber, just give up your money without argument. The cash is not worth serious injury or death. Get to a safe place and call the police immediately.
• If lights around the ATM are not working, don’t use that machine
• Avoid ATM machines adjacent to obvious hiding places
• Have your card ready and leave quickly, not counting your cash in public
• Beware of offers for help from strangers during an ATM transaction
• Don’t fight with or attempt to follow the robber
• Drive or walk to a safe place and immediately call the police

Yes that’s right “back again” is what I am. No sooner had we gotten home and settled after our anniversary trip and vacation than there was trouble elsewhere. My wife’s mother became very ill and hospitalized in Rhode Island. We were on the phone constantly trying to keep updated and aware of how she was doing all to no avail as she passed away last week on Monday 10/13. We spent the day Tuesday 10/14 on line and the phone getting all the arrangements and airline tickets plus car rental and hotel reservations for the trip back for the funeral and flew out on Wednesday via Southwest and spent the rest of the day in transit somewhere. At least the ceremony was nice and not marred too terribly by juvenile bickering over who was where in the receiving line. We returned late late Sunday night or that is Monday morning 10/20. So here I am finally back at work after not getting much done the last month or so. Looks to me like Sarah did just fine against the big bad Biden wolf even though he did insult her a few times and use false information more than once. While the whole thing was moderated by someone who has written a book about the Obama’s very favorable to one side (democrat), due to be released on inauguration day and the entire journalistic world called that fair.
Now the big bad bailout is going ahead full speed since the House caved and we are going to own a lot of repossessed real estate, oh joy. Poppajohn is hoping for the best and once again fearing the worst. Time to get tooled up.
Which leads me around to something I wanted to talk about on Monday but let go till now. You may recall Poppajohn and his wife just returned from a trip to Reno and Vegas. Well part of that was of course driving between the two which as any map will tell you is right through that part of the Nevada desert the US Military calls home in more ways than one. There are a load of Government installations in the area including the one called Area 51. I wouldn’t think too awfully much about the encounter the wife and I had since it didn’t involve aliens except that there was one thing about it that I had not seen for oh bout forty years. We were traveling down a two lane highway when we met a military convoy coming from the other direction, not a very big one just four Humvees and a small truck. Now it’s real hard to tell what service Army, AF, or Navy after they get in camo and so are the vehicles, so coulda been any of them including CIA. It’s just that they had BMG 50 calibers on the vehicles and not just mounted but manned locked and loaded. The fifty caliber Browning Machine Gun is THE biggest baddest piece of small arms ordnance that has ever been invented. That is what I had not seen for all these years and never ever within the geographical confines of the US unless it was on, that is inside a military base, it did make an impression on me. They also had M-60 Machine Guns mounted on the secondary turret on the truck, I just have to assume that whatever it was they were transporting they meant to deliver intact. They were pretty much prepared for whatever they might meet and you should be also. Well if we are to believe what the media keeps shoveling, the outcome of the election is a foregone conclusive victory for the Democrat Party in all facets. If I must imagine a world in which the Dems are in charge of everything, that is both houses of Congress the Presidency and the news media then I have to foresee a day when you and I will look up from our work and notice that we are the only ones paying taxes and all of our money is going to those who don’t. As more and more of our tax money goes to those who actually do nothing it is natural then that our benevolent government will continue to need more and more money from those of us who do something and will therefore take it from us at a faster and faster rate until ultimately they take it faster than we can make it (which may be the way it is already come to think of it). Lucky thing for me and the only reason I can get up in the morning is I don’t believe what the media is shoveling for one second even though I do prepare for it. Preparing for it consists of readying ourselves for the onslaught of crime precipitated by a world run completely by liberals. As more and more jobs are lost to business failures brought on by higher and higher taxes and more and more restrictions on business. The lost by the wayside folks will need to eat and live and therefore end up on the public dole. Those who would prey on the working folks are still going to be preying on the rest of us and as their ranks swell due to hard times they will be preying on more and more of us who still try to play by the rules we grew up with, resulting in more and more crime against individuals. Along with this will come greater and greater pressure against the second amendment, those who would disarm the population are just straining at the leash in anticipation of getting their messiah in the white house. This will of course extend to non lethal self defense items as it has already started to. I tell you it’s bloody terrifying to contemplate which says we have no choice but to prepare for it.

We had Artillery outfits that were I believe eight inch SP (sorry that’s self propelled) M-110 Howitzer units they fired a 200 pound projectile out to almost 17 kilometers (16,800-meters). That’s why when I ran across this article in my local paper the Orange County Register I was absolutely astonished that here was an educator that sounded so much like me that it coulda been me. So naturally I just hadda share it with alla you folks. Here it is exactly the way it was found nothing added nothing taken away.

I recently caught the movie “The Patriot” on cable. The 2000 movie depicts the events of the American Revolution in the South. The leading character, played by Mel Gibson, a composite of Daniel Morgan and Francis Marion, helps defeat the British under Lord Cornwallis. The movie is above average for accuracy in Hollywood, even if it doesn’t come close as a documentary.

What I want to address is from a captivating scene early in the movie. In the scene, Gibson’s character sees his second son killed, his home burned and his eldest son taken away to be hanged by British troops. Unlike most 21st-century Americans, Gibson’s character doesn’t look around for a lawyer. He grabs a bunch of firearms and enlists the aid of his two school-age sons. They catch up with the British patrol taking the grown son to his execution and, basically, massacre them. Both young sons help by killing British soldiers.

How many modern-day Americans would even dream of doing the same? Not many, I’d wager.

More importantly, how many could? I’m military-trained, but neither of my grown sons has even fired a gun. At ages 12 and 10, as were the apparent ages of the boys in the movie, I cannot even imagine my asking them to do what the boys in the movie did. My question is this: Does this make America a better, safer country? Or does it make us less safe, and less self-reliant? My vote is the latter. A citizenry that is not willing to defend itself is not a citizenry that can guarantee that they will continue to be free.

In the wake of the recent Supreme Court decision upholding an individual’s right under the Second Amendment to own guns, I would like to point out a couple of important implications that “The Patriot” highlighted. For starters, we have been given the right to protect ourselves from danger, whether foreign or domestic. To give up that right is going against the well-reasoned intentions of our founding fathers.

Another, even more important consideration is this: The founders expected citizens to be able to have guns as good as, or better than, the standard military weapons of the time.

In “The Patriot,” the guns Gibson’s character and his sons used were clearly long rifles, weapons that could hit a man-size target up to 300 yards away. The British soldiers had smooth-bore muskets, probably the Brown Bess, which weren’t likely to hit anything reliably from more than 50 or 60 yards. To me this means that the writers of the Second Amendment wouldn’t have had any problems with private citizens today owning automatic weapons, possibly up to .50-caliber machine guns.

How about handguns? Give me a break. There is no way that they could have imagined banning pistols. They wanted to give us the right to protect ourselves.

The difference is that they trusted common citizens to be able to make responsible decisions. Our current government doesn’t trust us nearly as much. Why else would we have seat-belt laws, bicycle helmet laws and hands-free cell-phone laws? The list goes on and on. The truth is that they don’t trust us.

It is amazing to me how anti-gun advocates can always point out how many accidental shooting deaths occur each year but never mention how many lives are saved by someone having a gun besides just the bad guys. How many horrific shooting sprees, like the one at Virginia Tech last year, might have been avoided or reduced if citizens, as the founders, could have protected themselves?

Our Nanny State, in trying to protect us from ourselves, has taken away too many of the basic rights our forefathers fought for and sometimes died for. Good movie, “The Patriot.” If you’ve never seen it, you might consider renting it. It might remind you that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.”

One unalienable right the framers didn’t enumerate, because it was so obvious to them, was the right to be treated as a responsible adult, not as a child.

Well there it is and as I and George Washington have always said:
“A free people should be at all times armed”.

So be armed (always carry personal protection), be aware and have a plan!!

ARMAMENT

Well looks like the free nation of Georgia is still in the eastern bloc the Georgians just didn’t know it. Russians in the Northern and Southern Osettia states of Georgia are celebrating just like the rest of Russia over the apparent victory of Russia over the miniscule Georgia in their invasion. While we and the rest of the world celebrate smaller victories at the Chi Com olympics. Yeah I have a problem with the Communist state of China also but at least it appears they may be able to join the twentieth century and get away from the post WW2 perceived greatness.
The US does not have the ability to respond militarily to this invasion of a sovereign state and ally since good ole boy Billy decimated our military during the nineties. Oh yes he did! Ronnie had built it back up again after Carter ruined it post Vietnam and Clinton re-ruined it during his less than a majority tenure (made possible by your friend and mine? Ross Perot). My major problem with the current administration is that they have had nearly eight years and a really good reason to make us strong again but have done nothing. We are still stuck with the half size army (yes half) and the no longer preparing for the future Air Force and Navy. We are cutting back new weapons systems which the left says are no longer needed since the end of the Cold War. An end they did everything they could to forestall (the left is hard to figure). Now however we have the ex KGB agent Putin running the show in Russia and guess what, he seems to have liked the cold war and wants to bring it back. Looking at his record in Chechnya, Dagestan and now Georgia he is reclaiming and re-establishing Russia as a world power. At the very time when we are over committed in the middle east and elsewhere with a still too small military. We are being slapped in the face by the Russian Bear and it looks like we are going to have to just take it.
NATO don’t make me laugh they deploy peacekeeping forces not fighting forces. They will do nothing and Georgia will be disemboweled by the bear and returned to their submissive condition of earlier years while we watch and do nothing because we can do nothing we just don’t have the goods, the strength or influence any longer. This is due to sixty years of the leftist influence of the American Academia and Journalist cultures. Which incidentally is the same reason we walked away from Vietnam after winning the war there on the ground (because Walter Cronkite told us it was what we had to do).
