Poppajohn says enter no North American forest without it

Hi, Folks; De Old Effo is back cuz bears are in the news here in California: A woman walking her two dogs in Caliente CA. (Thats a rural town near the mountains and a recent burn area) was attacked and severely injured by a black bear, the reason we know it was a Black bear is cuz back when folks in California did things fer the benefit of the "Human" race the Grizzlies were eliminated for being too likely to eat someone. Bears are sometimes provoked by dogs who get between a mother and her cubs but it doesn't seem to be the case here. The woman although seriously injured managed to escape the attack and drive herself to a fire station along with her two dogs it seems. One of the dogs was also injured but not seriously they say. The lady was later airlifted to UCLA Medical Center for further treatment.

Folks, Poppajohn has been saying for years don't camp in, walk in, eat in, drive through, or even be near possible bear habitat without bear spray or a large caliber firearm at hand, having both is preferable. Bears are unpredictable, they do what they damn well please and sixty years of watching em be cute and cuddly on World of Disney does not change that. The bear authorities here (i.e. Fish and Game) were trying to track the bear so far without success. Why were they tracking the bear (to kill it) we kill them after they attack a human. Kind of like the police whose job it is to respond to crime not prevent it.

Now Poppajohn loves the outdoors and would not harm any wildlife unless it was necessary but when it becomes necessary one must have the means at hand. Now bear spray can actually prevent the necessity of harming a bear and that makes it really great stuff to have with you on your camping and hiking trips.

The Sierra Club wants new laws requiring anyone entering the Forest in grizzly bear country to carry bear spray Spokeswoman Heidi Godwin said in a news release, "The proper use of bear repellent pepper spray will reduce human injuries caused by bears, reduce the number of grizzly bears killed in self defense, and help promote the recovery and survival of the grizzly bear."

Poppajohn doesn't necessarily approve of making new laws whenever the wind blows, but it does show how effective bear spray is against bears.

De Old Effo believes what Heidi says is true but Poppajohn personally has a major problem with "re-introducing" Grizzlies into areas where they will definitely come into contact with people (they eat people). For that matter Black Bears are not just cute and cuddly teddys either. Bears of any stripe are large well equipped predators and while there are not a lot of incidents in the US concerning human and bear confrontation, there are some and they seem to be increasing.

Also, make sure that the spray you are using is registered with the EPA for use against bears. There is a special formula for this and ordinary pepper spray is not recommended.
